Welcome to Chapel City Church! Last week we wrapped up chapter 1 that introduced us to Jesus Christ as being better. Better than what? Better than anything! He is the better word, the one who created and sustains the universe, the one who is by very nature God, and the one who completed the work of redemption for his people. Most of chapter 1 was spent proving that Jesus Christ is better than any angel. He alone is the sovereign ruler of his creation. He was there in the beginning, and he has the authority to undo his creation in the end as he brings a new heaven and a new earth. The angels worship Christ, and they minister on his behalf to those who will inherit salvation. But why spend so much time on angels? As we open chapter 2, we discover the reason. The people are considering going back. Back to the law, back to the way things were. But the author pleads with them not to turn back. Don’t drift! The law was good, it served a high and holy purpose, and it brought consequences for rebellion. But that law, given by angels, has been eclipsed by something better. Would you turn from the lesser to the greater? If ignoring the law had serious consequences, how much more for rejecting the great salvation offered by Jesus Christ? We would love to know how we can be praying specifically for you. Please reach out through our connection cards, or by emailing us at the church office with any requests or questions.
For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. For if the word
spoken through angels proved unalterable,
and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? Hebrews 2:1-3a
