Peter has told us that we are to keep our behavior excellent among the watching world, so that God might be glorified. But what will that look like? One of the most practical ways that our faith will work itself out is through our response to authority. In the coming weeks, we will think through how we as strangers and sojourners are called to respond to authority in politics, in daily life, in our marriages, and to one another. And a right response in all of these areas begins with the understanding that our ultimate submission is to God. What we believe to be true about God will then drive our humble, obedient response to the other authorities in our lives. And, once again, all of this is for the primary purpose of worshipping the God who called us to himself!
Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. 1 Peter 2:13-14
