One of the major themes that Peter has dealt with in his letter is the Christian’s response to authority. For much of chapters 2 and 3, he made it clear that our humble response to human authority will be a telling demonstration of the power of the gospel. Now, as he prepares to close his letter, Peter instructs his readers with their response to one another in the church. But does authority exist in the local body of Christ? Who should have authority and how should that authority be exercised and responded to? Peter reminds us that in his perfect wisdom. God has given order to his people. And the way that we exercise and respond to authority, both in the church and in the world, continues to demonstrate to a watching world the power of the gospel. If there is a way that we can be praying for you specifically let us know!
Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness.
1 Peter 5:1-2
