Sons or Slaves?

Sons or Slaves?

Good morning, and welcome to Chapel City Church. We are so glad that you have joined us for our time of worship together. We would love to know how we can be praying specifically for you, so please fill out a connection card or email our church office with specific requests. This week we will open up the first part of Galatians chapter 4. Our bibles have chapter and verse breaks that help us locate passages easily. But it’s important to remember that the original letter from Paul wouldn’t have had those same divisions. Chapter 3 ended with a critical statement about believers becoming heirs of the promise made to Abraham. Chapter 4 opens with that same theme in mind. Paul is going to give an illustration that shows his readers how they have moved from bondage into freedom through faith in Christ. The problem is that they seem to be tempted to go back to what they were before. Seeking justification by works of the law isn’t another way to be made right with God. It’s a move from freedom back to slavery. It’s trading the way of life for the shackles of sin and death. And Paul pleads with them to consider who they are in Christ, and not to trade away their position as heirs, sons and daughters of God!

Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore, you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
