The Lord & His Anointed

The Lord & His Anointed

In his introduction to the series on the psalms several weeks ago, Pastor Matt reminded us that the theme of all the psalms is Jesus Christ himself. But beyond this general theme, some psalms provide us with specific prophecies about the coming Messiah. We know they are about Messiah because either Jesus quotes them about himself or other New Testament writers quote them about Him. Psalm 8, the psalm that Pastor Matt taught about last week, is one of those, quoted in the New Testament to teach us about the Son of Man as the conqueror of death.

The first of the Messianic psalms is Psalm 2. Three portions of it are quoted in seven different places in the New Testament. This week, we will begin with a quick introduction to Messianic psalms in general, and then learn about Psalm 2 in its original Old Testament context. Once we understand its context, we can move ahead to talk about what it teaches us about Jesus Christ and his kingdom. Understanding who God is and what His plan is for his anointed one should lead us to love and obey him more. Please let us know how we can be praying for you or how we can minister to you.

But he [David] was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.
Acts 2:30-31
