Condemning Counterfeit Worship

Condemning Counterfeit Worship

Welcome to our time of worship here at Chapel City Church. As you join with us today, we would invite you to consider what worship looks like. What does it mean to worship? Is it a specific action or attitude? How do we know when we have really worshipped and not just done something that looks like worship? As we move through Matthew 23, we are going to come across the harshest language that Jesus speaks in the entire gospel. He condemns the religious leaders for their failed worship. He calls them hypocrites, men who portray one thing on the outside but who are something else entirely on the inside. It’s not enough for us to stand on the sideline and shake our heads at their failure. You and I must think carefully about our own worship and what makes it acceptable to God. The comforting truth is that genuine worship, though offered by imperfect people, is acceptable to God because of the work of Jesus Christ. We would love the opportunity to answer any questions that you might have, or to pray with you today!

“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.”

Matthew 23:13-15
