We are moving into the last month of the summer already, and that means that many of us are preparing for transitions. For some, it is a transition back to a busier work schedule. Many are headed back into ministries of all different kinds around the church. And for a significant number of our families, that means looking ahead to the new school year. As we do that, several of our high school seniors will transition out of our youth ministry. This weekend we will take some time as a body to celebrate them, congratulate them, and pray for them. Some will stay close, and some will leave for college out of state. So, what do we say to people in transition? How do we encourage our children (and ourselves) to live wisely? It turns out that the Psalms speak to us in this time as well. This week we turn to psalm 139, a familiar song of praise to the Lord. Here, we find some sweeping descriptions of the power and nature of God. We take comfort in his power over creation and in his intimate knowledge of our lives. But how does that knowledge transform our thinking and our actions? How does an understanding of God impact my thinking about my plans, my identity, even my sin?
