Questioning the King’s Authority

Questioning the King’s Authority

Good morning and welcome to our time of worship together here at Chapel City Church. We are so thankful that you have joined us today. If there is a way that we can be praying for you, or if there is a need that we might help meet, please reach out and let us know. As we continue through the passion week narrative in Matthew’s gospel, we are faced with the mounting rejection of the messiah. As Jesus rides into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey, it would seem like the pinnacle of his ministry. But this isn’t the time for his coronation, it’s the time of his humiliation and crucifixion. Our passage today begins to develop that building sense of rejecting Christ. We will see a fruitless fig tree cursed for its lack of fruit. But why curse a fig tree when figs aren’t in season? What is the larger issue that Jesus is pointing to with his action? As the religious leaders question him, why does Jesus ask about John the Baptist? And why does this passage give us pause as we reflect on our own response to Jesus?

And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.

Matthew 21:21-22
