The Cup of the King

The Cup of the King

Thank you for joining us for our time of worship here at Chapel City Church! We are glad that you are here, and we would love the opportunity to get to know you and to answer any questions that you might have. Today we will come to the Garden of Gethsemane in Matthew 26. It’s here in the quiet setting of a familiar garden that a battle for the souls of men will take place. The Son of God, the King of Kings, will be faced with the cup that the Father has given him to drink. Jesus knows what is coming. He knows the physical pain of the cross. But more than that, he knows that in a matter of hours he will bear the righteous wrath of God poured out upon sin. And he knows that he will bear it alone. Will the Son drink the cup? Why does it matter? What did his disciples need to understand, and why does it matter to us? If there is something that we can be praying for specifically in your life, please let us know.

Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

Matthew 26:38-39
