This week we will continue our journey through the book of Amos as we study chapters 7 and 8. By this point, we know that the minor prophets in general have a lot to say about judgment. But it can be easy to focus on the judgment and forget the tremendous mercy of God. As the Lord gives Amos a series of visions, he demonstrates both his patience and his justice. Israel will be judged, and judged rightly for her sin. But God will remain faithful to preserve a people for himself. But how do these visions impact us today? How can we take the failure of Israel and use it as a tool to ensure that we don’t make the same mistakes?

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,
    “when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
    but of hearing the words of the Lord.
They shall wander from sea to sea,
    and from north to east;
they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,
    but they shall not find it.”

Amos 8:11-12
