Recapturing Freedom

It’s safe to say that none of us will ever know what it means to be a slave – one who has lost his or her personhood. But many will experience that loss of hope and purpose that comes as a result of withering criticism, injustice, and mistreatment that is completely outside our control. Sunday we’ll look at Peter’s startling admonition to slaves. It will help us live in freedom even when “enslaved” by the actions, the circumstances, and the opinions of other people. We’ll look in 1 Peter 2:16-25 for Peter’s challenge, then jump to Philemon to see a New Testament answer to slavery. This is a crucial message on survival under the worst of circumstances. I hope to see you in service on Sunday.

Were you a bondservant when called? Do not be concerned about it. (But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity.) For he who was called in the Lord as a bondservant is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a bondservant of Christ. (1 Corinthians 7:21-22 ESV)
