Thank you for joining us for our time of corporate worship here at Chapel City Church! As we come to the end of the Book of Jonah, we are confronted once again with Jonah’s rebellion against God. When he was in the belly of the great fish, he called out to God for deliverance and salvation. He trusted that God was both willing and able to save him from his dire circumstances. After he was rescued, he presented the message of coming judgment to the people of Nineveh, and they responded with humble repentance. So why is Jonah so infuriated with God’s patience toward the people of Nineveh? As we will see, it wasn’t because he was surprised by the character of God. No, sadly Jonah resented what he knew to be true—that God was slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The book of Jonah ends with a chapter full of questions. These questions aren’t just for Jonah. They resonate with us 3,000 years later as we grapple with the truth of who God is, what he is like, and how we are called to respond.
And the Lord said, “You pity the plant, for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night. And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?”
