The King’s Design for Marriage, part 1

The King’s Design for Marriage, part 1

As we open up God’s word together, we will be moving into Matthew 19. Jesus is going to be challenged by the Pharisees with a question about divorce. Knowing the Pharisees, we can understand that they weren’t looking for truth, but for a way to trap Jesus. However, Jesus answers their question in a way that helps us see God’s design for marriage. But what is the foundation for that design? Is marriage something that can be changed or redefined as culture changes and society progresses? Before we can talk about divorce the way Jesus did, we need to understand marriage the way that God intended. We understand that thinking through marriage can be difficult. Some have no intention of getting married, and some desperately want to be married but are not. Some have lost a spouse that was a gift from God, and some struggle with a spouse who has no intention of loving the way that God has commanded. In all of these things, we want to teach the truth in a way that is both clear and careful. If there are questions that we can answer for you, or specific ways that we can be praying for you, please reach out and let us know!

He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?”

Matthew 19:4-5
