Welcome to our time of worship here at Chapel City Church. As we work through Matthew 19, we are thinking through the King’s design for marriage. The Pharisees challenge Jesus with regard to divorce, but he directs their attention back to a right understanding of marriage. From the beginning, God has designed marriage to be a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman. This union not only grounds the family unit, but it displays the glory of God and the relationship between Christ and his church. But we live in a fallen world. Sin breaks fellowship and relationship, and sin impacts marriages. So what do we do with divorce? Did Moses command divorce under certain circumstances? Does Christ allow for divorce for any reason? We understand that this can be a difficult topic to think through. Even where there is biblical clarity, there are times when compassion is lacking. If there are questions that we can answer, or if you want to talk further, please reach out and let us know.
They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” He said to them,
Matthew 19:7-8
“Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
