For the last several months we have been working through the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5-7. It was a prime example of the authority of Jesus Christ demonstrated in His teaching about the coming kingdom. As we move into chapters 8 and 9, we are going to look at the authority of Christ as it relates to creation itself. We will see his authority over the physical world and over the spiritual world. We will see his authority over sickness, disease, and even death. And we will see that this authority is another means that Matthew uses to prove that this Jesus is exactly who Matthew claims Him to be. He is the Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham, and the Son of God.
That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.” Matthew 8:16-17
