The Suffering Servant

The Suffering Servant

Welcome to Chapel City Church. We are glad that you have come to worship with us today. Last week, Dr. Behle helped us understand the reality of the cross of Christ. The gospel message continually reminds us that sin has a cost, and that by the grace of God Christ defeated death so that we might live. However, something changes roughly three hours into the crucifixion. The physical creation responds to the spiritual reality being played out on Golgotha. For three hours, darkness covers the land, and the Son is silent. Then, as the darkness lifts, a cry of desperation shatters the stillness. But why? What is the significance of the darkness, and why did Christ call out to the Father in that moment?

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Matthew 27:46
