Welcome to our time of worship together here at Chapel City Church! Last week we witnessed one of the most dramatic scenes in Matthew’s gospel account as Jesus was transfigured before three of his disciples. They saw the King of Kings in his glory and splendor; a foretaste of what the coming kingdom will look like. But does that experience clear up all of their questions and doubts? Is a singular experience the cure for a little faith? As we move through the rest of Matthew 17 in the coming weeks, we will see that the disciples still had much to learn. As they process the marvelous thing that they have seen, the disciples begin to filter that experience through what they know that the prophets have written. This leads them to a compelling question. What about Elijah? Or, more broadly, does God do what he says that he will do, or does he sometimes change his plan? And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” He answered, “Elijah does come, and he will restore all things. But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.”
